ADSL2 Broadband explained
ADSL2 adds certain features to regular ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) that boosts performance, improves data rate and reach performance. ADSL2 and ADSL2+ offer speeds of up to 24Mb download and 1Mb upload, depending on location. The niche that this line will fill is the growing demand for IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and VoD (Video on Demand) services that require increased bandwidth to stream live video without subjecting the customer to pauses while the program or film downloads over slow connections.
Speed is dependent on location:
1.ADSL2 is only currently available in urban areas. Insert your postcode into our postcode checker to see if you can access this speedy connection.
2.The speeds that you can expect depend on the distance of your house from the DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer)- the closer you are the faster your connection.
In this way the DSLAM allows telephone companies and ISPs to provide fast copper wire internet connection technology (DSL) with the fastest backbone network technology (ATM, asynchronous transfer mode).
Additional information:
- ADSL2 also has better diagnostic tools that allow service providers to monitor the quality of your connection and prevent service problems.
- Luckily both ADSL2 and ADSL2+ can run on the regular ADSL lines but you may need to purchase a bespoke router in order to avail of ADSL2+ (approx £59.99).
