Company history
Sky Broadband is part of British Sky Broadband (BSkyB), a company which was formed when Sky Television and BSB merged in 1990. Sky Television pioneered satellite television with their revolutionary Astra satellite and BSB provided similar services to customers in the UK.
Though the company was primarily recognised as a satellite, and subsequently digital, television provider they are now extending into providing broadband services. In 2005, BSkyB took over the ISP Easynet, an active broadband provider across Europe.
It was this move which prompted CEO Rupert Murdoch to develop Sky Broadband. Sky Broadband’s popularity is the result of the great deals which they offer combining broadband services with digital television. Sky Broadband’s slogan ‘Go faster, do more’ shows their commitment to efficiency and development, in both the company and its customers.
- Customer service
Customer service
Sky’s reputation as a quality service provider is firmly reflected in their customer support, with knowledgeable and helpful staff on hand to assist with any queries regarding their broadband service.
Lines are open 7am-11pm, 7days a week with calls charged at a local rate. Alternatively, for virtual assistance, the online ‘Ask Sky Box’ allows you to type in your query and receive a response without even picking up the phone.
- Equipment
Equipment
All packages come with a free Sky Broadband Box–a wireless router to you and me - which means you can surf the net throughout your home. On top of that, the Sky installation pack also includes three free microfilters, and all the necessary wires and plugs.
A ‘Get Set’ CD is included with all packages for easy set-up, however a Sky engineer is available for a professional home installation service from just £50.
- Software features
Software features
McAfee Internet Security Suite is provided with a 12 months’ free subscription (usually £49.99) with all Sky broadband packages. Having the latest in security software means your computer will be protected from online viruses, spam, spyware, and hackers, so you can surf the web with confidence. The security software also receives constant information on new threats, scams and viruses. For ultimate peace of mind, McAfee’s child-friendly filters also protect the little ones when they are online.
- Email features

Sky offer a generous ten email addresses to share with your family in the home, with 200Mb of storage for all those messages, documents and pictures. You will also receive access to Sky’s unique photo website for uploading and saving galleries of high-resolution images.

My experience with Sky has been appalling - I left as soon as my 12-month contract expired. The price I was quoted (per month) was nonsense as they put their prices up soon after I joined and then capped the broadband at a ridiculous 2Gb/month (you have to pay £5 extra if you go over that - so another excuse for a price hike!).
Their customer service is also non-existent and (worst of all) you have to pay to sit in a queue as it's an 0845 number!

I went with sky in July 09 and i have done nothing but complain to them about the trouble i am having, when using their broadband, and your using their phoneline at the same time.
I get a terrible interference when i use my phone. i do use the filters they sent me, but the phoneline is still bad when using their broadband. I have contacted sky since July 09 but i still have this problem. I am still waiting on sky to sort this problem fo me. I am not happy with the service i have received from sky so far.!!!!

Steer Clear of Boardband with SKY, they are the worst providers I have experienced. They have not replied to my letters of complaint for not providing the service I pay for! There customer service is appalling.

Hi. I want broadband and maybe sky TV (it should have sports ie Ashes, Wimbledon, etc). I have been told that our house has a not-great signal.Do you check this before you proceed to sell some product?
The house has a dish but we do not have a phone line connected. Do we need this? Also how does the installation work, do they come to the house? If so how long does it take? sorry for all the questions but this is the first time for us! I'd really appreciate it if someone gets back to me asap.

As someone who works and looks after a family on her own, I think signing up to a sky triple package with a bonus of a Tesco gift card was one of the best household decisions I've made this year - everyone's happy and we're saving cash!

I've been a sky tv customer for 20yrs with phone and b/band elsewhere,I'm looking to bundle it in one. I pay sky £40 for tv. being an OAP. I need to economise. I find some friends have been offered a free Sky box out of the blue, one of which I gave a free Sky connection to that came with a new tv I purchased about 10yrs ago, for being a loyal customer, and they pay for basic tv.

I've been a Sky broadband customer for ages and have never had to contact them until last week - I was expecting hell, as is so often the case when you call up these companies for support. However, the guy was totally helpful - I am surprised but really really happy!

When I contacted Sky to discuss broadband. I was told that the mid package was £5 pm. I contacted the sales agent to to place my order for the mid package, sky talk, and sky line.It then transpired that Wraysbury exchange was outside the network and broadband mid would infact cost £17. By cancelling my sky movies I managed to keep almost within my budget. My Questions are, How can I find out when my exchange will be upgraded? and why is it so much more to pay? After some help from my friends (who seem to know more that the sky chaps!) I am up and running. Happy with my broadband but not happy with having to pay so much more than I was first told

I have Sky HD unlimited talk, Broadband Max, My TV side? Can't fault it, I have problem with my phone line before and broadband too, when I went over to Sky they took over a month to sort it but as normal it was down to BT who manage the lines and our local area everybody only get 3.5MB anyway. At off peak times I get 5.1MB and peak times it goes down to 3.4MB but it is stable now not like before. They manage the line for me and try to give me the best service availble. If you have slow speed you need to push and write and complain to get something done.

Sky is fantastic! The TV is outstanding, the call packages are well worth it and the broadband is fast and reliable! if you are looking for any of these or all, go for Sky!

Would love to be able to join sky broardband. But cant afford to pay £17 a Month Plus £50 set up fee. Why cant we recieve the Cheeper deals!!!!

Ignoring the fact that Sky wouldn't let me use my own router, their service is fantastic, no complaints at all!!!

John, 24th August 2008

Sky is not everything it appears to be. We have Sky TV so our monthly bill for broadband should be £5.00 for an 8Mb package, but after 2 years we are still paying £17.00. The excuse from Sky is that the excahnge has not been updated - so before you buy from Sky I would check this out - otherwise Sky broadband is great.

jim bennett, 10th August 2008

Sky broadband is the worst ever, you get what you pay for and when it's cheap it's bad. It never stays connected for long and when you speak to someone it's hard to understand what they are saying, as you are speaking to someone in some cheap call centre in another country.
teena bush, 21st July 2008

Absolute rubbish... I'm paying for 8Mb and I'm getting nearer 0.5M... I'm not happy and will be changing ASAP!!!!

Not very good, customer service is very poor.

I left AOL after 4 years of excellent connection and upload speeds and regret it everytime I try to sign on. The service is slow and unreliable, customer care comes in the form of A, B & C. If your question does not fall into one of those three categories, expect little or no support.
Overall I wish I had not signed up. My connection is 3-4Mb at best and I pay for 16 Mb. Not good, stay away and do your homework!!!!
Steve (Meadowfield exchange), 17th February 2008

Sky are good. Their customer service is 232nd to none.

I've been with Sky Broadband for a year now, and every little glitch and problem I've ever experience has been fixed inside a day. The customer support people are always happy to help and I've constantly had good service. I generally find that any problems that occur result from something that I've done. £10 a month (on top of my TV package) for 16Mb Broadband and a Free Router. Not bad...

Peter Mays (Bromley exchange), 8th January 2008
-
I have had my broadband with Sky for 2 months now and have to say it's appalling, my 16Mb is so slow that my dial-up is quicker . You are wasting your time complainig it will take at least 1 hour on the phone 7 departments before you get anything done. I would never recommend Sky.
Michelle leicester, 31st December 2007
-
At the moment my rating of Sky would be minus 8 as we have been waiting 8 weeks to get back on to the email service since the company decided to switch from one server to another. So far we have been unable to receive any explanation from the helpline as to why this should be. We have made 8/9 phone calls and written 2 letters but still received no satisfactory answer.
Mr A. Roberts (Chippenham exchange), 30th December 2007
-
I have found sky Internet to be excellent - untouchable to honest. People come to my house and are jealous of how fast my computer and internet is. I had 8Mb AOL before this and thought that was good, but it's not a mark on Virgin!
I do have one discrepancy though and thats with the TV - I had the full package and the TV is bad, but the internet and phone more than make up for that.

Roberto, 13th December 2007
-
I was with Bulldog before and was paying for Sky TV, I'm now saving over £30 a month from switching to Sky's bundle package, and I even get around 12Mb per second!

Louse, 26th October 2007
-
Poor service. I'm paying for the 16MB service but receive 4MB even on a good day. Customer services are useless and never call you back. I guess you get what you pay for!
Michael (Four Oaks exchange), 22nd October 2007
-
On Sky MAX (16mb unlimited) for £10 per month. Amazing speed and value for money when you consider competitors lousy offerings (previously with Namesco- great support but very bad vfm!). Have had no problems and no need to phone support. It just works!
Absolutely the best out there at the moment if you have Sky tv and are in a Sky LLU area.

Steve, 7th October 2007
-
Brilliant second to none

Mick Williams (Newport exchange), 3rd September 2007
-
Lousy service, I have had Freeola for 5 years and they were brilliant. However, every time I try to get onto Sky at the weekend its a no go. I have had to complain constantly and by some miracle I am on tonight. I am completely frustrated with them.
Beverley (Canvey Island exchange), 22nd August 2007
-
Their customer service team were really helpful when it came to choosing, and then installing Sky broadband. It all went as smooth as clockwork.
Having ten emails is brilliant especially as my kids want to send messages to their friends too. Obviously Sky’s security software gives me peace of mind so I can let my children roam the internet without needing to interfere too much. It’s a shame the subscription is only for 12 months though as it would be good to have this as a permanent feature. I would certainly pay for extra software though for the security it brings. Overall I’m a happy customer!

Robert, 9th August 2007
-
Sky’s combination packages offer great value for money, I’m really happy with what’s included especially the free wireless router. I get bored easily if I sit at a desk so having the option to be mobile while I surf the net is a real plus–most of the time I sit with my laptop in front of Sky TV. I guess I’m a bit of a Sky couch potato! Would be brilliant if they could provide a virtual gym too!

Ryan, 9th August 2007
-
I’ve had Sky satellite TV for ages so it was easy to add on broadband as well. I now have their See Speak Surf package which means broadband is included–it’s nice to have everything taken care of with one monthly bill. The customer service team arranged for this to be set-up very quickly, and my installation pack came through in no time. All-in-all, I’m really pleased with Sky–they haven’t let the fact that they are a massive company stop them from having friendly customer support. Excellent service!
