Company history
Orange is perhaps best known as one of the UK's largest mobile phone networks and, though this is where company originated, it is now developing rapidly as an ISP. With over a million customers, and bases across Europe, Orange has secured a reputation as a modern, forward-thinking company set on pushing technical boundaries.
Originally Orange was a British company but, since its formation in 1994, it has been taken over by leading European telecommunications giant French Telecom and now has an even greater customer base and range of services. Included within the company are the pre-existing ISPs Wanadoo (which itself was originally Freeserve). The merger has combined Wanadoo's experience with Orange's ambitious ventures.
As a relatively young ISP Orange are keen to prove themselves by ensuring efficiency and excellent value for money.
- Customer service
Customer service
Orange's dedicated members area means customers can manage their broadband accounts without even picking up the phone; from paying a balance to upgrading to a different broadband package. Alternatively, by emailing Orange with the nature of the query, they will reply quickly with the solution.
Telephone support is available also, with dedicated lines available depending on the broadband package, and type of query. Calls are charged at a national rate (except Broadband Starter Technical Support, charged at 50p a minute) and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (excluding Broadband Starter Customer Support, which is open 7am-11pm, 7 days a week).
- Equipment
Equipment
All Orange options come with a good range of hardware, providing a complete package for easy set-up. Orange's Broadband Starter package includes a USB modem, 2 filters, enabling an interference-free connection through the telephone line, and a set-up CD for a quick and easy start.
With Broadband Home Max, there is the added bonus of Orange's "Livebox" a wireless modem, which can connect up to 6 computers at once. It also enables calls via the internet, and the option to play video games with online participation from other gamers, by connecting a Playstation 2 or Xbox. Orange will also be introducing new features and services to Livebox in the future.
- Software features
Software features
Customers can have complete peace of mind with Orange's broadband security software. All packages come with McAfee Privacy Service, which includes parental control features with options for what the kids can and can't access online.
Additionally, with McAffee software, the computer will be protected from hackers, viruses and spam emails. This software is free for Orange Broadband customers, and available to download from the online member centre.
For complete security Orange broadband customers can also purchase McAfee Internet Security Suite for the discounted price of £39.99.
- Email features
Email features
Orange provides every Broadband customer with an account with an allowance of 100Mb, which can be increased to 500Mb, which means storing photos, music and other large items won't be a problem. There are no limits to the number of email addresses that can be created under a single Orange account.
Customers can also build up to 5 websites with Orange, and are provided with a webspace limit of 30Mb per site. They also provide a beginner's guide, which means setting up a unique website is simple and easy.

Movie-goers will love Orange Wednesdays! All Orange home broadband customers receive two cinema tickets for the price of one, every Wednesday to see any film at participating cinemas. Great for film buffs.

I am an Orange customer for my phone and broadband and mobile broadband. I 100% have faith in this company, and have moved my whole family on the network. The service I have had from the company speaks volumes.
Like most of you have had a few problems with my service but always at the end of a phone Orange customer service resolved my problems. I would ask you all to try one of their services.

I have been with Orange as a pay and go phone customer and they have always been first class with coverage. We are now becoming broadband customers.

I've been an orange mobile customer for a while, I put my faith in their mobile broadband and went the whole hog for a laptop deal - don't regret it for a minute, it's ace!

I have an Icon 225 and it is rubbish, it started out fine and now i find myself in month 8 of an 18 month contract and the connection speed has become very slow and also I have started being charged over 50 pounds! even though it is supposed to be 12. Also the sales assistant I bought the device off said that it would be easy to access an online account to check for bills and such but this not the case and I am very very angry. If I can not find a way out of this trap I shall be taking matters a lot higher this is extremely unacceptable!
Darren Hooper, 25th April 2009

We swapped over to Orange because my husband and I have our mobile phones with them so it seemed to make sense - a great decision and I 100% agree about the helpful staff

Jan Smith, 26th March 2009
-
The broadband wasn't great, but the guys who helped me cancel it were great. Really helpful and friendly. The broadband might suck but the call centre staff were excellent.

Sabrina Lowe, 27th February 2009

My ICON 225 dongle is a waste of time and money. DO NOT BUY ONE. Customer services charge a fortune and patronize you to the extreme. You will find that you are trapped in an 18 month contract that you can't break even though the dongle is quite useless, so they are not even offering the service they promise. It is slower than even dated dial up and crashes all the time. No reply to a letter sent months ago now. I will avoid ORANGE from now on.
Grant Gillespie, 15th December 2008
-
Right, I've got to say you get great service with orange broadband. I was with them for 2 yrs and left them for a change to Virgin media ADSL broadband god, how bad is Virgin. If you download 2Gig in a week they cap you for it..... grrrr. So I'm going back with Orange Broadband. I've got to say the customer service in the cancel department is brilliant.

Orange was great until I had to contact customer services, it was then just an awful frustrating experience.

I have had good service from Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange until I got PPP_Server down a week ago. Orange are now showing their true colours in the Tech Support field fobbing me off with line tests and factory resets over and over again. The amount I have spent on phoning the Customer Support has probably cleared the Indian GND! Avoid.
Mr S Clark, 21st October 2008
-
DO NOT JOIN ORANGE BROADBAND!! They took 4 MONTHS to set up my line, a year later i moved house and after a month of phoning USELESS Indian call centres and getting nowhere with having my broadband moved over, I had to argue for 2 hours solid and force them to cancel my contract and waver the £300 cancellation fee!!! Useless rude staff who even laughed and hung up the phone on me! AVOID!!!

Dongle and free lap top package...£25 amonth, 18month contract. Lap top ok, connection absolute rubbish! Any internet page i'm looking at continuously either disconnects or i can only click 2 or 3 times and i have to start all over again! MSN and FACEBOOK are always disconnecting....am really fed up! My monthly bill should be £25, have just paid £40.01! and 3 people and 2 phone numbers later, i finaly get to pay my bill! Come on orange offer me better or i will go elsewhere! If I cannot surf the internet uninterrupted, you are not fullfilling your promise. I await to see if I get a response....not holding my breath! A very cheesed off customer!
Mrs Vicki Evans, 15th October 2008

I joined Orange broadband over a year ago now, the connection is quite good, I took out what was the unlimited package back then and only had a few minor problems like dropped lines. Now it works perfectly fine, the livebox they provide you with, however, is pretty bad they have promised something called liveprinter when it first started but i think they have forgotten about it.
Another thing is unless you have a draft onto your livebox all the time it is very prone to overheating. Since the day after I signed up I have had download speeds of 6.5Mbs and upload speeds of 512kbs.

Why can't I get this service from Wanadoo/Orange in France???
Robert McClair, 13th August 2008
-
It took Orange over two and a half months to remove the tag from our line, during which time we had no broadband. I rang them loads of times and found their customer service skills lacking.
They kept telling us the same thing over and over and promised to un-tag the line but then ended up leaving us waiting for 20 days... Orange are the worst company we have ever been with!
J Dummett, 13th June 2008
-
Four weeks and numerous phone calls and still no broadband. Customer services rattle through the same script over and over again. I have gone through resetting the box that many times I how to do it by heart. On my last phone call I actually received an apology.
Add to this that I have to go out nearly every day to use the internet somewhere else - I am very frustrated. Please Orange sort yourselves out because the service was great up until now.
J Bennetts (Newquay exchange), 7th June 2008
-
My broadband has been down for three weeks now, I'm sick of dealing with Orange. Their customer helpdesk people just read scripts and don't have a clue. They told me the fault was fixed after two weeks via a txt message, but it was not. So I had to go through the whole stupid proccess with them before. DO NOT SIGN UP WITH ORANGE!
Ian (South Harrow exchange), 16th April 2008
-
I have Homemax and I am paying £24/mth, I am supposed to be getting 8Mb and have never topped 0.5 Mb/s. All attempts at getting better speeds have failed. I would not recommend signing up to Orange. I will honour my contract and will change rapidly. Ofcom has been useless at responding to my complaints.
william williams (Aberdare exchange), 25th February 2008
-
I have had broadband from Orange for over a year now and haven't had any problems at all. I am getting nearly 8Mb download and I have recently moved to the Max product where my line rental is included and free calls on my second line - I also have mobile from Orange which means all of the broadband and second line plus line rental for 15 quid a month - bargain!!

Paul Davies, 6th February 2008
-
Orange customer service department often leaves you on hold for minutes or even hours. They think it's acceptable to make you sign a contract for a utility and leave you with no service for months. They have no acceptable support for older people and non-techies either.
richard lobsiger (Holme On Spalding Moor exchange), 27th January 2008
-
Last night my Orange broadband stopped working (trust me it happens with any provider), anyway, I found the service from the call centre excellent and they got me back up and running within 10 minutes. Faultless service.

F Herd (Epsom exchange), 9th January 2008
-
Dreadful service - my connection died nearly a month ago and I can't get any sense out of the call centre which is manned by people who don't speak or understand English very well and who are as about much use as a chocolate fireguard.
In the course of "sorting out" my problem they have tied me in to a brand new contract which I will have to pay to get out of!!! Don't touch them with a barge pole!!!!
Linda Dalton (Altrincham exchange), 9th January 2008
-
Great broadband. Cheap calls. Low cost. the perfect broadband package. Orange comes highly recommended.

greg franks, 15th November 2007
-
When it works it can be good but the few problems i have had have been nightmares!!
it took over a month to get connected from recieving the hardware. it has gone down twice since in 12months and the latest problem PPP_server down is running over 12 days to clear after many line tests, costly phone calls and numerous factory resets it still dont work and talking to call centres abroad over very very poor quality lines, please avoid orange at all costs!!
Daniel Baker (Chelmsley Wood exchange), 6th November 2007
-
Pffftttt... I wouldn't even bother. Before I even signed up to them I was treated like rubbish.
Apparently you don't need a BT phone line, etc. Yes, you do, you need to pay BT for your phoneline before you can go anywhere near Orange.
Customer services - rubbish. Called them to ask about signing up. My questions were completely ignored while some monotone fool read me rubbish off of a script. Then put me through to somebody else, which just cut me off.
Disgusting.
The future's bright, but not with Orange!
Cora Newman (Swindon exchange), 21st October 2007
-
Great broadband for £5 a month and free calls to 30 countries. You can't beat it for that sort of money. Once the line was activated, it took all of 10 minutes to get up and running. Shame so many others have had problems.
If only I could get my Nokia N95 on their Unique service (similar to BT Fusion), I'll be an even happier Orange customer. Shame, they have missed a good opportunity there.

Martyn Thompson (Bristol West exchange), 10th October 2007
-
Don't bother. "Unlimited" service is not unlimited.. They WILL clock you. If you download more than 40GB a month (as I did 40.02) you get an "oh so polite" "Stop or we will be forced to close your account" letter. Speed is ok IF the hardware provided worked fine. I'd say go for another provider, anything but orange. Anyhow I guess as name suggests. There's no black and white with them. Only Orange.
David Overs (Great Yarmouth exchange), 5th October 2007
-
Solid if unspectacular broadband. I have had no problem with the support from Orange.

Jon Jenkins (St Andrews exchange), 25th September 2007
-
Disgusting service. Four months it took me to get my crippled mother the free phone calls and internet services she was abliged to pay for. I hate this company for causing my poorly mother and myself extreme stress, hurt, and dignity. Disgusting. By coincidence I run an IT company as a consultant and advisor. I advise strongly against using Orange.
Richard Lobsiger (Starbeck exchange), 25th September 2007
-
I am very happy with my Orange broadband thank you very much. the LiveBox really makes it worthwhile. My mum also has Orange and she too is very happy. Orange are better than AOL.

Kevin Arbiter (Gower exchange), 21st September 2007
-
When I first saw the Orange broadband deal with the free laptop ,it could not have come at a better time. Starting a teacher training course, I needed a laptop and was going to buy one. Instead I got this deal... what a mistake. It has been down now for over two weeks after calling the poor customer support I was constantly being told to call back in 24 hours. After days, I asked to talk to a supervisor, he promised to call back and did not. The support team just read from a book and do not actually know what they are talking about. I do not reccommend this service to anyone. I am now going to cancel and move to another provider.
Kerri Billingham, 21st September 2007
-
I have had nothing but good service for 3 years. I can see nothing to complain about with Orange. The LiveBox is superb.

Charles Kreu (Durham exchange), 21st September 2007
-
Truly awful customer service. Awful reliability. Awful equipment. Avoid Orange at all costs.
alex (Churchdown exchange), 20th September 2007
-
Do not use Orange! - I changed to 2mb in February and I am still getting no better than 0.5mbps after nearly 7 months of calls to them and over 80 emails!. The customer service (or lack of it!) is pathetic!. They promise callbacks and never bother, they promise the problem will be sorted out in numerous e-mails, and after 7 months they have done Nothing! - I have Never known a company as bad as this and get away with it. It's disgusting how Orange can get away with stealing £19.99 a month of me for what little service I get. Do not use Orange!
Andrew (New Brancepeth exchange), 9th September 2007
-
I was worried about Orange after seeing all the bad press, but they seem to be working really hard at improving their customer relations as I've received several phone calls to check that my broadband is OK. Orange Broadband is fine - very similar to the Virgin broadband I used to have.

Tom, 7th September 2007
-
Orange are cr*p. After moving from dial up to broadband, the broadband did not work and after making many phone calls to customer service to put this right, I have now gone to another ISP.
Alan, 22nd August 2007
-
I’m making full use of the Orange Wednesdays 2-1 cinema tickets offer, it’s saved my girlfriend and I quite a lot of money already as we’re real film buffs.
The package I opted for includes quite a lot such as a wireless modem, and I love the fact it enables me to play games online by just plugging in my Playstation 2. Unfortunately I spend quite a lot of time competing against my opponents–luckily I can make it up to my girlfriend with a free trip to the cinema!

Andrew, 8th August 2007
-
The Broadband Starter pack was a really good choice for me. I’ve only just started using the internet so felt quite safe knowing there was a 30 day money back guarantee should I decided I didn’t need it. It turns out I use it most days–I even have my own email address!
I didn’t fully understand the technical jargon and I still don’t know what a modem is–but my grandson confirmed I’d got a good deal.

Margaret, 8th August 2007
-
Having an Orange mobile contract meant I got a good deal on my broadband too with a huge monthly reduction as a result. Now for only £5 a month I get 8MB broadband, unlimited downloads and a wireless connection, which is a bargain! Setting up was really hassle-free, even getting the wireless connection to work was easy.
Going with a well-known company such as Orange you expect good customer service, and I work in a call centre so I know what the standards should be. Luckily, Orange haven’t let me down so far!

James, 8th August 2007
-
Orange are fine, customer service is lacking, but it's good value and fast enough for me. Also, if you want to make lots of calls in the evening - you can make free calls with the Livebox. Very good.

Marie Ryder, 3rd August 2007
-
Let's get some perspective here, Orange is not as bad as most people make out and I have never had a serious problem with it and the customer service I have encountered has been fine - nothing like what I hear TalkTalk customers have to endure. Orange offer free broadband to people paying £35 a month on their mobile, plus they now offer a £7.99 and £9.99 (unlimited) broadband option for new users. i simply do not see that there a bad option - and you can get up to 8mb too - which is more than enough for the average punter. They may not offer many frills - but you can get free phone calls through the Livebox, plus there's rumours that Orange TV is in the offing. Sign up with Orange and I doubt they'll be too much to regret.

Ant Cooper (Mortlake exchange), 3rd August 2007
-
I got Orange at a discounted price with my mobile contract. To start with the service was good, I only got 1Mb on due to my BT wiring, but it was fine for general web use.
The Livebox they give you is pretty cool. You can plug in your printer and print wirelessly and you can cheaper home phone calls with the VOIP phone feature on it.
However after a couple of months something happened and my connection died, which is when I had my first encounter with Orange's AWFUL customer service centre.
I've never been spoken to in such a patronising way before. The call centre staff have a terrible script to read from and there's no deviating from it. The experience left me feeling frustrated, and after two month's of no broadband I finally switched away for good.
