Company history

Company history

Be is a relatively young company who are punchy, ambitious and determined to bringing you the fastest possible broadband speeds at the lowest prices. In the three years since Be was formed it has grown rapidly and is now cornering the metropolitan market with brio. The company was formed in 2004 and began trading in 2005, by 2006 their lightning speed technology had been recognised by telecommunications titan O2 who then proceeded to buy them out. Though Be is now part of a much larger group, which has almost 35 million customers, the company have maintained their individuality. Be is well-reputed for developing newer, faster broadband technology and are one of only two ISPs in the UK who use ADSL2+. Like ordinary ADSL broadband, this still runs through BT phone lines but only the recently updated connections so their groundbreaking 24Mb service is exclusive to urban areas.

Customer service

Customer service

Even for a relatively new company, Be are leading the way with good old-fashioned customer service. Lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for general or technical queries. Customers can log into the member area for free online support, which covers most issues including connection assistance, general questions and answers, and updated news and notifications from Be. By raising a ‘ticket’ customers can also get free direct support from a member of the team who will endeavour to reply right away.

For just £24 connection fee, getting started with Be broadband couldn’t be easier!

Email features

The home email bundle is a great optional service for Be broadband customers, which provides up to 5 email accounts for just £2 per month. Not only that but you also get a massive 1 gig of storage, which can be allocated between each account. All email accounts include anti-spam and anti-virus protection so you can be sure you are only receiving the emails you want to receive. Additionally, the home bundle package also includes 100Mb of webspace per account, which is great if you want to set up your own online page.

  • 2 years I'm with them now on the Pro offer. I like the static IP, the speed, the customer service. A few glitches, but globally the availability is there. Only two regrets: their Box is really "minimum" features and they don't do IPv6 nor do they have plans to.

Also one of the few providers you don't need to pay by D/D.

  • I've with be for more than a year now. I'm happy with their broadband speed and customer service. My download speed is faster than any other ISP around my area.

I'm a HEAVY internet user (web developer/blogger)... most of my day spends in front of computer (downloading/uploading) and browsing. If I say BE is good, that really means good.

    Highly recommended.

  • Been a BE customer for just over 1 year now.

Really cant wait to get away from them. Very unreliable and unstable line. I get a top-speed of 6.7mbps despite taking their top-of-the-range 24mbps line.

    Where to start....

The line continuously disconnects. I have to restart the router about 10-16 times every months (and yes the router has been replaced!!) . Firmware has been updated (but in truth its no newer than the firmware already on the router)

They have tried switching my profile so many times from a fast speed to a slower more stable speed but what am I paying for??!! An yes even on s-l-o-w-e-r speed its disconnects but less frequently. Have tried different adsl filters and cables as well.

The customer service is a shambles; If IF you can speak to someone you can understand!! the language barrier is terrible and I know they try but its simply not acceptable.

    Cannot recommend; stay away

  • I have been a customer of Be for nearly three years now. My previous service provider was not providing anything close to my package, let alone what my line was capable of. Switching to Be unlocked the full potential of my line. I have super low latencies which is perfect for gaming, and even on the mid range package the upload speed is second to none. Combine this all with the fact that the service is almost never congested, and you have a superb internet package for a very good price.

  • Would you please send me a Mac Code I wish to change server for two reasons. 1. I am being charged nearly £30 per month when you are giving offers of a lot less than that to new customers. 2. I lose broadband in the middle of work that I am doing, I then have the labourious job of logging on not just once but a few times. Your urgent attention would be appreciated in supplying the Mac Code. P.A. Lamb 18TH jUNE 2009 X

  • Very good since July 2008. Things like advance notice of maintenance make a nice touch.

    Speed is always very good.

I don't mind paying for good service.

  • Be are more expensive than other ISPs, but like most things in life you get what you pay for.

I'm very happy with the service and speed I receive, and the Be staff are always helpful. They also join in on the support forums so if you have any problems you can get a quick and friendly response.

The only thing I'd like to see Be better do is push forward on the technology like when they first launched. The Be box is looking a bit old compared to the HomeHub from BT.

    starstarstarstar Peter W, 27th February 2009
  • Joined a month ago and was initially very impressed by the prompt delivery of the box.

Unfortunately I then discovered thanks to two and a half hours of phone calls, that Be has a problem connecting computers with windows vista. It took two calls and my imminent cancellation to get them to solve the problem.

To make things worse I was then charged for a full months service (despite only having 10 days) and the money was debited from my account a week earlier than had been arranged.

When I complained about the service I was told that if I wanted to leave I could but I'd have to pay for the full year. Clearly I don't want to leave after putting in this much effort to get the service working, I just want an apology for the fact that the company messed up my finances and left me without internet for three weeks despite me asking for help.

When I initially called up I found the company very helpful but since then I've found them very difficult to deal with and at times really rude.

I'll be leaving as soon as my contract is up.

  • I migrated from AOL Broadband to Be and have been very pleased. I just ran a test and I'm getting speeds of 16.3Mb (download) and 1.09Mb (upload). It's been good all the way, the service to hook up was great they keep you informed all the way. I would recommend upgradeing your router to Netgear DG834N "Next wireless ADSL2 Modem Router" to get full satisfaction.

  • Great speed, great support service. So far, no complaints :)

  • I just migrated to be from tiscali, scary is the word to describe what we have never had for the last few years, as the speed difference is startling will keep checking service but we a re chuffed with be so far

starstarstarstarstar ken mack (Calne exchange), 1st February 2008
  • Amazing! Be connected me in four days. We tried Virgin twice ("sorry, you can't get connected", although we live in a cabled area. Virgin didn't even bother to check it out). After that we waited six weeks for BT to connect our phone line (they did a good job thinking we had to be connected from scratch). And then Be went live in four days and now we have amazing fast internet. I searched on the net that we should be able to receive 6Mb/sec. We have 10Mb. Thanks Be :)

    starstarstarstarstar M D, 18th November 2007
  • Migrated from aohell ! jeeeez midblowing speeds ! i`m on pro now and uploading faster than i was downloading with aohell ! uploading at close to 2meg, Cusomer relations are superb ! top notch guys keep it up :) would highly recommend.......

starstarstarstarstar Dods (Nelson exchange), 7th November 2007
  • I have just migrated over from AOL to Be Broadband and I must say what a difference it makes to talk to people who know how to explain things and not sound like they are working from a script like they sound to at AOL.

I had a few problems setting up the modem that Be sent to me, so I contacted Be and their staff realy do have the skills to sort out the problem. They had me up and running in no time.

Be technical support and customer services are excellent.

Maybe they could give AOL customer services some lessons on good customer relations?

Keep up the good work Be!

    starstarstarstar Neil, 7th September 2007
  • Be broadband is as fast as you like and never seems to go down (have had it 6 months without a hitch). It's a shame it's not available nationwide as my family in Scotland cannot get it and have to rely on slooooow 2Mb broadband connections from the likes of BT and AOL. I can download a film in hours or a music track in 2 seconds. Be broadband is great basically. Virgin Media reckon they offer super-fast broadband, well Be offer super-super fast broadband. Awesome.

starstarstarstarstar Brett Grayson (Writtle exchange), 22nd August 2007
  • This is brilliant–incredibly fast broadband speeds, wireless connection and unlimited usage all for a really good price. It’s basic but I believe quality counts over gimmicks and unnecessary extras.

Their customer service team are really friendly–working in IT support I sometimes get chatting to them about IT and they really know their stuff, which is obviously a good thing. As a new company I think they’ll start to add a lot more useful features, which will obviously keep me happy.

    starstarstarstarstar Richard, 9th August 2007
  • I was attracted to Be as they have a fresh way of offering broadband in an industry that is already well established. So far, my experience of using Be has been mainly positive. The Be Lite package offers everything I need for a very reasonable price including wireless! I would have preferred some security software to be included but I suppose you can’t have everything, especially when they offer one of the fastest download speeds on the market.

    starstarstarstar Michelle, 9th August 2007
  • I’m always willing to give new companies a try and I haven’t been disappointed with Be. I often download music from the net and I really noticed the difference with the super-fast broadband speeds. On Be Unlimited I get a fast connection and unlimited usage, which is perfect for me as I rely on the internet day and night for my job. Having wireless included also influenced my decision to join up with Be–I sometimes don’t get up until lunchtime, so I can surf in bed if I feel like being lazy.

    starstarstarstarstar Jeff, 9th August 2007
  • I've been through three ISPs in the last year including Orange, Virgin and Bulldog and I've had problems with them all ranging from 2 month outages to crappy customer service.

Be are like a breath of fresh air compared to the rest. Their customer support is stunning and you can even directly contact the MD via their web forums. They send you texts all through the installation process so you know exactly what's going on.

The bebox router requires zero configuration - just plug in your phone line and the power adaptor and you're online immediately.

Last but not least the speed of the connection is phenonenal. I'm quite far from my phone exchange but I still get a full 18Meg service. It's awesome!
