up to 512Kb Unlimited 12 months £13.99 Buy now »

One of the great things about Toucan is the money-saving packages that they offer. By combining your broadband and telephone line you can reduce your monthly outgoings and you’ll only have one bill to pay.

Toucan’s most simple package, Surf 1, is suitable for broadband beginners or those who wish to use the internet for simpler tasks such as surfing the web and checking e-mails. The contract is based on a minimum term of 12 months and your monthly fee of £16.99 Stand Alone broadband will include:

  • Free Modem – You can be up and running as soon as possible with free hardware as standard 512Kb connection – This isn’t the fastest broadband speed currently available on the market but at 10x faster than dial-up you’ll certainly notice the difference when you’re opening e-mail attachments
  • Unlimited Downloads – Toucan do not specify a download limit they just ask you to be considerate to other users
  • Free trial of ZoneAlarm – For 90 days you’ll benefit from protection against viruses, spyware and spam as well as trying out differing levels of parental control. If you’re happy with the software after this initial period Toucan will offer you the permanent service at a reduced rate
  • 5 e-mail addresses and 25Mb webspace – Keep connected with your friends and family by creating your own personal website

As well as all of these features Toucan also will also offer you line rental at the UK’s cheapest rate of £8.99 per month. Bearing this in mind you could save up to £18.12 a year BT’s rates (figures current as of July 2007).

The other benefit of switching your line rental to Toucan is that you will be able to save money on phone calls and broadband with Toucantalk. Instead of paying £16.99 per month for a broadband only package, you will pay £13.99 for broadband and calls. Toucantalk has four different talk options which you can combine with your broadband to create the best package for you.

Included within the £13.99 per month is a choice of Two-For-All or Saver, both of which offer free calls to UK landlines during off-peak periods and great deals on peak time calls. Alternatively for an additional £3.75 per month you can have unlimited off-peak calls with All-You-Can Off-Peak or, with All-You-Can, pay an additional £9.99 per month and receive unlimited anytime minutes to UK landlines.

Free weekend UK calls & modem

up to 8Mb Unlimited 12 months £14.99 Buy now »

Toucan Surf 2 is a big step up from the standard package Toucan Surf 1 and at only £1 more per month this is a fantastic deal especially if you’re looking for a more efficient connection.

With broadband speeds of up to 8Mb you’ll be astounded at how quickly you can download files, movies and albums and this super-speedy connection will also enhance the quality of online media such as digital radio. According to Toucan you’ll be able to download a 5Mb file, such as a music track, in only 9 seconds, which is a staggering 160x the speed of dial-up.

Just like Toucan Surf 1 you’ll also receive a free modem with absolutely no connection fee when you subscribe, as well as the excellent trial offer of ZoneAlarm security software. Additionally, you’ll be able to access Toucan’s customer support hotline whenever you need it, 24 hours per day, and at no additional charge.

The other similarity with Toucan Surf 1 is the great Toucantalk offers that are available. Once again you’ll actually save money on your broadband if you switch your line rental to Toucan and the line rental stays at the standard low price of £8.99 per month.

As a Stand Alone package, Toucan Surf 2 is priced at £17.99 per month, based on a 12 month contract, however by opting for a combination deal with either Two-For-All or Saver your monthly bill will be reduced to £14.99 per month. Similarly, other talk packages are available at a surcharge.

Customer reviews

  • My parents have been Toucan customers for a year and a half now, and I have spent God knows how long on the phone to incompetent customer service agents who barely speak English and who are absolutely unable to deviate from their moronically one-dimensional script.

Basically, if anything ever goes wrong (and believe me it will), it is nigh-on impossible to resolve the situation without causing yourself a huge amount of stress.

My advice? Avoid Toucan like the plague: they're a terrible ISP, who offer terrible customer service, false advertising, slow speeds, unreliable service (have had 4 months actually online in the last 7).

  • Poor technical support, incorrect bills, awful customer service.

See toucansucks.org.uk for more information including a £250 Toucan or Tiscali sucks competiton.

  • I have been with Toucan now for 4 years and I have found their servcie to be excellent.

I have NEVER been unable to log in.

Each year the cost as decreased along with the competition.

I have an "all in one package" with calls anytime.

  • This is by far the worst company I have ever came across, if you are thinking of choosing Toucan as your ISP, please don't. I have paid more money ringing the technical support, than the year's contract is worth and I've never ever had good speed - it's always around 0.3Mb. The technical support is a joke - they are under-qualified and I can't understand a word they say, they read straight from scripts - and I pay through the nose for that too. I got so frustrated once I nearly cried, thanks Toucan.

  • The worst service imaginable, it took two months to get my broadband going and I've had trouble ever since. Tech support is almost non-existant, hours of music on the phone and when eventually connected you find yourself talking to someone in India or thereabouts who can barely make themselves understood, very frustrating, I could go on.... steer clear!!!

star John Gillespie (Heysham exchange), 05 March 2008
  • I cannot connect to the internet if the phone line is connected as well. Even if the internet is solely connected, it won't connect most of the time.

The service provided is non-existant. I have tried to get off Toucan before but they have put something on the line that stops me going to other providers. I am going to refuse to honour contract and they can take me to court.

star steve knight (Donnington exchange), 02 February 2008
  • Had exactly the same experience as Allen, I signed up for an 8Mbps service and often receive a speed as low as 0.1Mbps, I refused to pay the extortionate call charges and sent numerous emails, after a couple of months I did get a phone call from their Tech Support guys and finally got up to a decent speed ~4Mbps (on my old ISP I constantly got 7Mbps and above).

That being said, if you want to use the internet for anything other than sending/receiving mail on an evening you can forget it, Toucan over-congest their lines as they operate with a 50:1 contention ratio whereas most ISP's offer 33:1 or even 25:1. All in all I would recommend you look for a different ISP provider, on the other hand their phone service is very good:-)

star Tony (Keighley exchange), 03 January 2008
  • Utterly pointless, takes a long time to come, staff from another country.

But when it gets going, after about 6 Months, it is very good.

starstarstar Jones Smith (Stepney Green exchange), 26 November 2007
  • Fine when it's smooth. But if you have a complaint forget it. They ignore you, you waste £s on rubbish overseas tech support. Then if you refuse to pay their debt recovery is verges on the menencing.

star D Snape (Newton Abbot exchange), 11 November 2007
  • I am just an ordinary guy , often too relaxed when things go wrong BUT my advice is to avoid Toucan. Allens message of 22 October sums up my own experience very well except that i was without any connection, or up to 0.4mbps, for FIVE months. Nice staff in Customer Service Centre so if things are going OK will come over as a competent provider which they are not. This not a hate campaign, I just want to help other potential customers avoid the same. They are hopeless when things go wrong.

star Mike Townsend, 07 November 2007
  • Agreed to a 12 mth contract for up to 8mbps broadband and was told to expect 6.5 mbps, actual speed in the evenings, only time I can use it, is 0.3 or 0.4 mbps. After numerous e-mails and £30 in premium rate phone calls to India, speaking to people who repeat the same standard script and tell me to repeat the same tests each time I call, I was told the obvious, that the problem is due to high number of users in my area. An agent promised to speak to BT and get back to me 2 days later, that was two months ago, I complained by e-mail and a agent phoned, promised to call back but never did. I e-mailed a further complaint three weeks ago, asking to cancel balance of contract, complaint has been ignored. So i am paying for 8 mbps getting 0.3mbps and being ignored ! What customer service !

    star Allen, 22 October 2007
  • Toucan. What a complete joke that they can even call themselves an internet 'provider' The only thing they'll provide you with, if you are unfortunate enough to fall for their false marketing, is a headache.

    star Elbert, 10 October 2007
  • I have had nothing but a reliable broadband service from Toucan for several years. Clearly there is a hate campaign being waged in the review section of this website, I hope to redress the balance. Toucan seem a fine company to me - I guess several people here must have been unlucky or had a poor experience.

  • Not since I confronted a couple of cowboy builders trying to convince my aged grandfather that he needed a new roof on a 5 year old house have I come accross such lying rogues.

    star keith, 18 September 2007
  • Dont bother with Toucan Broadband. Two tin cans and a piece of string works much better and is a lot more reliable.

    star dave, 18 September 2007
  • Toucan Broadband is a complete load of rubbish. No customer service. If you have a problem it will never be sorted. No matter how bad it is you will not be allowed to cancel or you will be threatened with legal action.

The most arrogant useless company I have ever dealth with.

    star jules, 18 September 2007
  • If you really want to know just how bad Toucan Broadband is, just "Google" Toucan broadband c**p, or rubbish, or problems and you will get the truth. Toucan are truly a rubbish service.

    star mal, 18 September 2007
  • Tried Toucan Broadband and after 2 days realized they were crap. No service, No customer support. Tried to cancel but was told I would have to pay the whole year or they would send the debt collectors around to my house. When I needed customer service no one was available. Now I get a call from Toucan Billing every day. I am so pi**ed off with the whole lot I am taking legal action.

    star tony, 01 August 2007
  • Toucan seemed like quite a well-known broadband provider, which gave me the confidence to trust them with my internet connection. For just £13.99 a month I received a free modem, fast connection speeds, unlimited downloads and free weekend calls, which I think is excellent value for money.

The service has been reliable and I’ve hardly needed to contact the technical support team, apart from the initial set-up stage. Really pleased!

    starstarstarstar Adrian, 21 July 2007
  • I really like the fact that Toucan included a free 90-day security software trial, as I probably wouldn’t have though about this when purchasing my broadband package.

I have teenage children, and I was confident to let them surf the net knowing that I could monitor what they were looking at. I’ve continued to use this service, which hardly costs anything, and is worth it for the peace of mind I get.

    starstarstarstar Craig, 03 June 2007
  • I just have to say how fabulous the customer service team are at Toucan.

I recently lost my broadband connection at home and they looked into it for me straight away. It turns out a cable had become disconnected, however they were really helpful and patient, and we eventually discovered what the problem was. I felt a bit silly but they reassured me that they are there to help with even the smallest of queries or technical problems. I would definitely recommend them to others.
