There are 50+ broadband providers in operation in the UK. However, we only list the biggest broadband providers in this section (whether for home or mobile broadband).

Broadband providers come in all shapes and sizes. There are a few very large broadband providers, such as BT and Virgin Media, as well as a host of smaller suppliers. The list of broadband providers is slightly overwhelming, hence broadband comparison sites are a great way to compare lots of broadband packages at once. At Top 10 Broadband, we try to help you to choose the right broadband provider for your needs by giving you information on each provider (above) and listing their packages in an easy-to-understand, concise way.

We do not recommend this area for a broadband package comparison. Rather, this section is intended as a brief summary of the UK broadband provider landscape. Most of the above broadband providers offer great value broadband and adequate service. All major home broadband providers now offer ADSL broadband UK-wide, with the exception of Virgin Media which offers a super-fast cable service in mostly urban locations and Be Broadband which supplies high-specification broadband (whether cable or ADSL2 or ADSL+) in selected areas.

• TalkTalk: is a large broadband provider, offering inclusive broadband when customers sign up to home phone packages. TalkTalk won the best broadband and home phone award in our recent Top 10 Broadband awards.

• BT: is the largest broadband provider in the UK and scooped the wireless broadband award in our recent Top 10 Broadband awards based on the strength of their wireless broadband products.

• Virgin Media: is the UK's sole consumer cable broadband provider. Virgin Media offers great value broadband bundles to UK broadband customers and won the fastest broadband award in our recent Top 10 Broadband awards.

• AOL Broadband: offers excellent broadband packages to UK broadband customers. AOL Broadband's short-contract broadband deals are especially highly rated.

• Be: is a high-speed broadband provider that offers great value broadband to a growing number of UK broadband customers. It specialises in gaming broadband and enjoys massive support from the online gaming community and heavy internet users.

• Tiscali: is a popular broadband provider, specialising in low-cost broadband, TV and home phone bundles.

• Orange: is both a home and mobile broadband provider, as well as a mobile phone operator.

• Plusnet: is a small ISP that offers tailor-made packages to customers along with excellent customer support. Plusnet picked up the best value home broadband award at the recent Top 10 Broadband awards.

• Sky: is one of the biggest digital TV providers and also offers broadband and home phone services as part of broadband bundles. Sky is a fast-growing broadband provider and won the award for best broadband and TV provider at our recent awards ceremony.

• Madasafish: offers excellent value broadband packages that include home phone and broadband bundles. Madasafish is known as the friendly broadband provider.

• Eclipse: is a specialist business broadband provider that also offers fast and highly rated home broadband to UK customers.

• 3: is a mobile phone provider that has turned its attention to becoming a mobile broadband provider too. Offering both pure mobile broadband and mobile broadband and laptop packages, 3 won the hotly contested best value mobile broadband award in the recent Top 10 Broadband awards.

• Vodafone: is another mobile operator turned mobile broadband provider. Vodafone offers a range of excellent value mobile broadband packages at speeds of up to 7.2Mb. Vodafone won the awards for best rated mobile broadband and fastest mobile broadband at Top 10 Broadband's recent gala event.

• T-Mobile: was a relative latecomer to the mobile broadband market, but has become a massive player in the market and offers connection speeds of up to 4.5Mb.
