Many people think that getting broadband at home for the first time or switching from their current provider is difficult - but it doesn't have to be. Not everyone can get every broadband package - this is due to the fact that some ISPs use special technology, such as for cable broadband or ADSL2. However, nearly every UK household can now get ADSL broadband - the most popular type of broadband package.

Wireless broadband packages

Wireless routers are devices that transmit broadband wirelessly so that a number of computers and gaming consoles can connect to the internet without the use of wires throughout the home.

Landlines

Most home broadband packages require an active BT landline in order to operate, this type of broadband is called ADSL broadband. If you have an active BT line you can either choose broadband packages that offer standard ADSL broadband as offered by the majority of providers or ADSL2 as offered by Be and O2 (if available in your area) or you can switch your BT landline to your new ISP's landline service and get inclusive calls as offered in broadband packages by TalkTalk, Tiscali and Orange among others. Finally, you can also get broadband via cable as offered by fibre-optic broadband provider Virgin Media.

As many people are finding that their landline usage has dropped in recent years, many are finding that they don't really want to keep their landline connection and/ or do not want or need a traditional home broadband package at all.

Alternatives to running your broadband over your ADSL-ready BT landline:

Mobile Broadband - packages run on mobile phone networks and therefore does not need a landline
Virgin Media - cable broadband packages run over fibre optic cables and do not require a BT landline.
