Apple iPad 'could soon offer mobile broadband'

TalkTalk could be set to offer mobile broadband through the new Apple iPad, it has been suggested.

Speaking to Tech Radar, Andrew Harrison, Chief Executive of the broadband provider's parent company Carphone Warehouse, said the firm was "really excited" about the emergence of the new tablet products.

He stated that smartphones have become "increasingly popular" over the last year as more people embrace the internet on portable devices, adding that the pad format could be next to "capture people's imagination".

"Apple has the best track record in doing this as we have previously seen with both the iPod and iPhone," Mr Harrison stated.

Potentially hinting at a link-up with the firm, Mr Harrison noted that TalkTalk looked forward to providing its customers with "additional options for connecting and consuming content in the future".

However, rival broadband providers Orange, O2 and Vodafone refused to comment on whether they are looking to provide 3G broadband services on the iPad.

Steve Jobs, Apple's Chief Executive, has described the new device as a "third category" between smartphones and laptops.

    Dan, 28th January 2010.

Nothing new. I've already got the kindle and the sony e-readers.
But why oh why would anyone wanna splash out on this and then be restricted to having to use the Apple book store for all their downloads for the new iscam?

Surely there are so many more people out there that would love to have this but would want full choice over where they buy their book downloads, etc, instead of being beholden to Apple's monopoly.
