Vodafone has introduced new roaming rates for laptop users

Vodafone mobile broadband travellers will now be able to take advantage of new tariffs when using their laptops to browse the internet abroad.

The internet services provider has launched a per-day data roaming scheme, which allows mobile broadband users visiting Europe to download up to 50MB via a dongle for £9.99 in a single day.

People who wish to download more will then be charged an additional £9.99 for every 50MB of subsequent data they download, which breaks down to a cost of 20p per MB.

The per-day roaming charges for people heading outside of the EU are set at £29.99 for up to 50MB and the same for each additional 50MB thereafter.

Vodafone advised its broadband customers that the tariffs extend from midnight to midnight UK time and urged travellers to keep time differences in mind.

The mobile broadband supplier is currently working on an alert service that would inform users of their data usage.

It introduced the new tariff to coincide with the launch of EU regulations on mobile roaming charges, which limit the wholesale costs of mobile broadband to €1 (85p) per MB.

    Peter Gross, 6th July 2009.

Viviane Reding and the EU have made good strides into reducing mobile phone roaming charges, but the cost of using the mobile internet is still very confusing for most mobile phone users in the UK.

Users don't understand the charging structures and there is still a significant variance in the costs applicable on the different tariffs.

For example, the cost for transferring 1MB of data per day for a month from a mobile phone ranges from £6/month to £210/month.

That's a good per MB price if you're downloading lots of data, but useless for light regular usage. If I want to check my e-mail every day for a month that will cost £300. No thanks.
