Lord Carter is to step down from government

Lord Stephen Carter's decision to quit the government will have little impact on the success of Digital Britain, it has been claimed.

Earlier this week, it emerged that the former head of Ofcom will step down from his position as Communications Minister, with newspapers reporting that he could possibly take over at ITV.

However, the Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA UK) has claimed that a change in personnel should not affect the implementation of broadband measures that were announced in the Digital Britain report on June 16th.

A spokesperson for the organisation, which represents the interests of broadband providers, called for the government to replace Lord Carter with someone from a telecoms background.

Commenting on Digital Britain, he said that most reviews are carried out by "independent people" but that it is left to "government and industry representatives to work together to try and take forward the recommendations".

Upon its publication, ISPA UK welcomed the report for recognising the importance of broadband to the economy and society.

Prior to receiving his peerage and taking over as Gordon Brown's digital tsar in October 2008, Lord Carter served as the Prime Minister's Chief of Strategy.
