Britain could be left behind in the internet TV revolution

The government's insistence on a minimum broadband speed standard of 2Mb in its Digital Britain report could hinder the take-up of widget TV.

With LG announcing recently that ARM processors will be integrated into its next line of internet-connected TVs, web-integrated TV sets are moving ever-closer to the mainstream, techradar.com reports.

However, Jim Wallace, head of ARM's home segment marketing arm, believes that the use of widget TVs in the UK could ultimately be hampered by poor broadband connection speeds.

"I would like more [than 2Mb] as that rate will limit the experience for watching HD content on the web. This type of speed limits what you can actually do," he told the news provider.

Mr Wallace believes that it is a case of "the faster the better" when it comes to widget TV, with a 10Mb broadband connection speed recommended as standard.

The government aims to ensure that the minimum broadband connection speed of 2Mb is in place for all homeowners and businesses by 2012.
