Broadband users reach 400 million

Broadband has reached a significant milestone with over 400 million users now enjoying high-speed internet services worldwide, according to the latest data.
Research conducted by market analysts Point Topic, prepared for the Broadband Forum, has found that the figures seen for global broadband use today represent a 600,000 per cent increase from a decade ago.
Point Topic has revealed that in 1998 there were only a meagre 57,200 subscribers around the globe, but that number had multiplied by six only a year down the line.
"Getting to 400 million subscribers in the ten years since then, has been one of the fastest rollouts of a major new technology the world has ever seen," said Oliver Johnson, senior analyst with Point Topic.
He continued: "Now we’re in the early days of a new era, which is going to be much more about quality than quantity."
According to Point Topic’s statistics, 45 million of the world’s broadband subscribers now receive the service via a super-fast fibre-optic connection.
