Northern Ireland minister meets BT chief

A BT chief has discussed plans for a next-generation network with the first minister of Northern Ireland.
BT Chairman Sir Mike Rake met the first minister Peter Robinson at Stormont to discuss the telecoms giant’s plans to invest £1.5 billion in a super-fast fibre-optic broadband network across the UK over the next four years, reports 4NI.
The two figures discussed the benefits for the region that could be brought by a high-speed broadband network, including a boost for the Province’s international competitiveness.
On announcing plans for the next-generation network in July, BT chief executive Ian Livingston said: "We want to work with local and regional bodies to decide where and when we should focus the deployment. Our aim is that urban and rural areas alike will benefit from our investment."
Meanwhile, a telecommunications cable that will run along the seabed of the Atlantic Ocean from the west coast of the US to Northern Ireland will improve the country’s broadband capacity, according to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment.
