P2P use ‘on the wane’

The use of peer-to-peer (P2P) technology by broadband users is on the wane, according to figures highlighted by one provider.
PlusNet, which recently revealed the extent of Britain’s BBC iPlayer use over the course of the Olympic Games, has pointed to figures which show the amount of P2P traffic has fallen over the course of the last year.
While the total amount of P2P traffic using PlusNet stood at 13.4TB a day last year it has been lowered to 12.2TB a day in 2008.
Attempting to explain the data, PlusNet’s Dave Tomlinson told Tech Radar: "It may be that services like iPlayer and 4OD are turning customers away from P2P downloads.
"Or it could be stories like the file-sharing letters or the proposed three strikes policy that is changing peoples’ thinking."
Six major ISPs signed an agreement with the British Phonographic Industry earlier in the year, agreeing to take measures to tackle the problem of illegal file-sharing.
