Governments aware of ‘broadband effect’

National governments are becoming more aware of the importance of fast broadband speeds, with 100Mb now the benchmark, one expert says.
Alan Harten of communications news provider The Telecom has highlighted the "competitive edge" which high-speed broadband allows countries to attain.
He said that as well as providing a boost for business, governments now want to see super-fast broadband reaching homes nationwide.
"It is no longer a race to achieve Fibre to the Home (FTTH), the new industry race is to achieve Fibre to Every Home (FTEH), and not only in every home but also to make that connection much faster than what is available now," explained Mr Harten.
He continued: "The US and several EU countries have made it clear that they want 100Mb to become the new standard speed to help boost business and technological advancement."
BT recently announced plans to provide ten million homes in the UK with 100Mb fibre-optic broadband by the year 2012.
