In-flight broadband market heats up
6th August 2008
The competition among in-flight broadband systems looks set to grow as Aircell, which has replaced Boeing’s Connexion as the system of choice, rolled out a new mobile broadband network on flights stateside.
Delta has announced the installation of Aircell wireless broadband connectivity on its flights.
Following in the footsteps of German airline Lufthansa, which first took broadband to the skies in 2004, Delta will equip its 330-strong US fleet with a mobile broadband network.
British Airways took part in one of the early in-flight broadband trials back in 2002, after finding that most of its business travellers were "interested" or "extremely interested" in surfing the web on their journey.
Connexion was involved in both trials for British Airways and Lufthansa before being abandoned after concerns were voiced about related fuel costs.
