Manchester plans for wireless future
29th July 2008
Officials in Manchester have announced plans to extend a wireless broadband network across the city.
As part of the Digital Strategy for Manchester, the existing Easterserve wireless broadband network would be rolled out for all Mancunians to enjoy.
If implemented, the network would ensure inexpensive next-generation broadband for the whole city.
The project was originally set up in 2000 to provide for residents in the east side of the city, which suffered from a shortage of landline cabling.
Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "I very much welcome this new development.
"Manchester has a very strong track record of putting together imaginative partnerships with the private sector and then using these to bring real local benefits to residents and businesses across the city."
Upon its launch the Eastserve project connected over 1,000 residents for as little as £6 per month.
