BT plans are not enough, says expert

BT’s plans to develop a new high-speed fibre-optic network in the UK are encouraging but could be more comprehensive, according to on expert.
The telecom giant recently announced a £1.5 billion investment plant to develop a super-fast broadband network in the UK, reaching over ten million homes by 2012.
But Michael Phillips, product director at Broadband Choices, said that there will still be large portion of British households that do not benefit from BT’s project.
Mr Phillips explained that to provide every UK household with use of a fibre-optic network would cost nearer to £15 million.
"If you look at the discrepancy between those two numbers and you also look at the fact that it is not even covering half the households," he told Comms Express. "It’s a great start but it doesn’t go far enough."
Top speeds of up to 100mbps are expected to be made available by the new network, with the potential for 1000mbps in the future.
