IPTV subscribers on the up

The number of Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) subscribers around the world is on the increase according to newly-released figures.
Statistics from the Broadband Forum announced at the Broadband World Forum Asia in Hong Kong show that the number of IPTV subscribers worldwide has ballooned for the second year running.
In the 12 months to March 2008, an increase of 53.14 per cent was recorded, with 15.5 million people now taking advantage of IPTV services.
John Bosnell, senior analyst at Point Topic, who carried out the study on behalf of the Broadband Forum, commented: "IPTV operators around the world have shown that systems are scalable and can handle rapid growth in subscriber numbers.
"However, developing and agreeing standards will help these operators deliver IPTV more simply and effectively over a variety of access technologies and help to drive higher uptake in other markets."
It was found that Europe was the strongest IPTV market, topping the global table both in terms of growth and numbers, now boasting 8.4 million IPTV subscribers.
