Following reports that its Home Hub routers were vulnerable to hackers, BT has denied that its customers are at an increased risk.

A statement issued by the company said that the vulnerability - which affects wireless connections - was not a problem that specifically affected BT hubs.

The comments come in response to claims by IT consultancy NCC group that readily available software could be used to connect to BT routers, enabling them to hijack internet connections and change passwords and other settings.

A spokesperson for the company told Reuters: "All Wi-Fi networks could be vulnerable to a determined hacker who is intent on breaking the law and of course people have to take care."

The representative went on to refute claims that customers’ credit card details were at risk as "complete nonsense".

Paul Vlisssidis, technical director at NCC Group, had previously told the Telegraph that information on the vulnerability was very widely published on the internet.
