Increased regulation is making the job of delivering broadband increasingly difficult for internet service providers (ISPs).

Online resource IT Pro makes this assertion in an article examining the ways in which recent legislative intervention has dealt a difficult hand for ISPs.

With the government siding with large entertainment conglomerates on the issue of where the responsibility for reducing instances of illegal downloading should lie, a level of sympathy has been generated for an industry that does not commonly receive it, the publication comments.

"After all, for most people, an ISP is the company you battle with over ropey connections, or usage caps, or an assortment of other assorted broadband problems," the report continues.

If ISPs are to uphold this duty, a large level of additional investment will be needed on top of stifling costs of upgrading existing broadband infrastructure.

This, the journal argues, simply will not be possible unless the government begins to show its support for the ISP industry.

Elsewhere, IT Pro has also reported recently that a malware virus attacking peer-to-peer filesharing users has infected more than 500,000 computers, making it the worst single attack of its kind since 2003.
