Mobile broadband ‘a reality’

Investment in infrastructure is seeing mobile broadband connections increasingly realistic for the European market, it has been claimed.
UK-based business information provider Report Buyer explains that the telecoms and broadband industries in Europe are increasingly catering for mobile connections.
Sweden is identified as leading this growth, after the initiation in early 2007 of a scheme to provide high-speed infrastructure to the country’s largest cities.
Meanwhile, across Scandinavia as a whole, stronger mobile broadband saw dial-up usage fall from 72 per cent of the market to nine per cent in the five years to 2006.
Within the UK, regulatory body Ofcom has recently called for more to be done to ensure high-speed broadband is available to new property developments.
The organisation is looking into the possibility of distributing broadband via the existing infrastructure in place for utilities.
As a result, lines could ultimately be carried alongside energy cables or within the mains and waste water systems.
