Fast broadband ‘vital’ for Web 2.0
25th April 2008
Access to fast broadband connections will be vital for new web-based technologies, according to one internet expert.
Commenting recently, Philip Rosedale, founder of Web 2.0 virtual world Second Life, said that there was a possibility that the development of new web technologies would be stalled because UK broadband infrastructure could not cope with delivering high-speed services.
According to Computer Weekly, Mr Rosedale suggested that the rollout of ultra-fast broadband delivered via fibre-optic cabling will be essential to the future of online services available in the UK.
He added that there was a danger that web developers, businesses and consumers would be affected if fibre-optic broadband deployments are unsuccessful.
One company already offering fibre-optic broadband services is Virgin Media, which has been running a high-profile Hate to Wait advertising campaign geared towards attracting users with high usage broadband habits.
As part of a special offer, the company is offering consumers unlimited fibre-optic broadband services from £4.50 per month.
