Online TV ‘could be huge’

A new UK poll has found that the demand for free online video content could increase dramatically in the future.
The Digital Entertainment Survey reported that 84 per cent of the 1,608 people involved in the study said that they would be interested in watching recently released movies online. Other content areas that respondents expressed an interest in were streamed music concerts and comedy gigs.
Entertainment Media Research has said that the poll highlights a strong growth area for broadband providers as well as the music industry.
When it came to the way such high-bandwidth services would be financed, the majority of respondents (70 per cent) said they would like to see free services that were paid for by embedded advertisements.
Such news follows a number of recent concerns about the privacy afforded by online advertising software, with a new deal with a marketing firm announced recently by BT, Virgin and TalkTalk receiving criticism from some consumers over the way that information on individual browsing habits would be tracked.
The Guardian reports that 95 per cent of broadband customers would choose to opt-out of the deal if given the choice.
