Next-gen broadband ‘needs co-operation’

26th February 2008

The recent review into the future of broadband should focus on collaboration between the government and suppliers, it has been claimed.

Kip Meek, chairman of the Broadband Stakeholders’ Group (BSG), has said that instead of focusing on "writing big cheques", the review needed to work out a structured timetable for the development of broadband services in the future.

"That’s why we’re looking at investing in infrastructure in a collaborative way," Mr Meek added.

An independent review was launched by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform on February 22nd which aims to examine the provision of domestic and commercial broadband services offering speeds of up to 100Mbps or more.

The BSG is the government’s leading advisory group on the broadband market and provide a forum for the discussion of current and future trends in the industry.

He added that if the consultation was to be successful, internet service providers would have to work together with governmental bodies and private sector businesses to ensure that the UK broadband market is ready for the range of online services that require ultra-fast connections.
