Broadband anti-virus take-up ‘high’

Around 90 per cent of broadband customers in the UK are using anti-virus software to make sure they are protected when using the internet, according to Get Safe Online.
Tony Neate, managing director of the organisation, said that British broadband users are becoming increasingly aware of the potential risks associated with the internet and are using anti-virus programs to protect themselves.
However, he advised consumers to look to install anti-spyware software as well to form a "two-pronged attack" against online threats.
Mr Neate suggested that further education was needed to make sure people know difference between anti-virus and spyware protection software.
"A lot of people don’t know there is a difference, but lots of the companies are now boxing them together so that you’re protected. If you’re only buying anti-virus software it’s not good enough."
There are a number of broadband packages available that offer anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection as an inclusive part of the service.
Get Safe Online is a joint initiative between government, crime organisations and business that aims to protect against online security risks.
