How fast is your broadband?

Top 10 Broadband, the UK’s fastest-growing broadband comparison website, has launched a highly advanced broadband speed test to coincide with the portal’s first birthday today. The speed test allows home broadband users to see what broadband speeds they are receiving.
On their initial batch testing of 5,000 speed tests, the team assessed that the typical speed enjoyed by UK consumers is just: 2.98Mb – just 35% of the average advertised maximum speed offered by the top broadband providers of 8.2Mb.
“With the current economic climate suggesting we all need to start tightening our belts, we see it as our responsibility to help people assess whether they are getting what they pay for from their broadband package. Switching to a better value broadband provider makes sense for many.” says Alex Buttle, Director of Formula who operate the site.
Buttle continues, “We believe that integrating our new speed test with our broadband ‘deal-beating’ technology will bring a new dimension of information and tailored-choice to broadband customers”
“We are confident that giving consumers the opportunity to test their broadband speed will add much-needed transparency to the broadband market and serve to highlight the margin between speeds promised and speeds delivered.”
The launch of Top 10 Broadband’s speed test comes in the wake of increased pressure being placed on broadband providers by Ofcom’s Consumer Panel who recommends that UK broadband customers should be allowed to break their contracts if the speeds that they receive differ from speeds advertised. PC magazine Computer Active are also taking this cause on-board, with their online campaign petitioning for ISPs to advertise “typical” broadband speeds in place of the current trend to advertise maximum speeds on offer.
