Residential broadband speeds on the up worldwide

Broadband speeds for residential customers are on the up across the globe, new research has revealed.
According to data from Point Topic’s Broadband Tariff Benchmark Report, speeds increased in Western Europe by 6.2 per cent to 5.5Mbps between the second and third quarters of this year.
Meanwhile, North America & Canada was up a relatively meagre 0.17 per cent.
However, the region with the fastest increasing average connection speed was South and East Asia, where the average connection was nearly 36Mbps - an increase of 132.15 per cent.
The second-largest speed increase was in Asia Pacific, where speeds now stand at almost 15Mbps, representing an increase of 38.70 per cent from the preceding period.
Commenting on the findings, Fiona Vanier, analyst at Point Topic, said: "The most significant changes were seen in Asia Pacific and South and East Asia. This is due to operators such as China Tietong and NTT which have introduced services with downstream speeds as high as 100 Mbps."
