Physical formats top the charts, PlusNet survey shows
3rd October 2007
More and more people are shunning music physical formats in favour of downloads, but few believe that the official top 40 singles chart any time soon, a survey has revealed.
According to a study of 100 high-bandwidth broadband users conducted by broadband provider PlusNet eight out of ten consumers now regularly download music from the internet.
Meanwhile, 22 per cent of those surveyed said they now no longer buy cds at all and obtain all their music as downloads.
However, just 57 per cent of respondents believe that the UK will have a download-only national Top 40 chart in five years time, while 32 per cent think that a chart compiled exclusively from download sales will never happen.
Commenting on the figures, Neil Armstrong, products director of Plus Net, said: "Whilst downloading music from the internet is clearly on the up, old habits die hard and people still want to hear the UK’s official Top 40 which combines both online and physical CD sales.
"However, as the rise and rise of online music continues, one day it will provide the only real picture of the popular music in the UK today."
