Ofcom launches broadband consultation

Communications regulator Ofcom has unveiled its consultation on the future of super-fast broadband in the UK.
The move follows a high-profile speech by government minister Stephen Timms on the issue of super-fast broadband, in which he urged the industry to become a world leader in the technology.
Experts believe that investment in such a network would cost in the region of £15 million and the regulator’s consultation will centre on whether the country should adopt a nationwide fibre network.
"Next generation access offers tremendous new opportunities for UK business and consumers, and its potential impact on the economy is very significant," explained Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards.
"We want to ensure there are no barriers to investment and provide a clear regulatory environment which will help encourage investment," Mr Richards concluded.
