Scilly Isles leads broadband take-up

A higher proportion of internet users have opted for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) broadband in the Scilly Isles than anywhere else in the UK, it has been revealed.
According to recently revealed statistics, nearly 50 per cent of all domestic and business users have opted for ADSL access on the remote islands.
Meanwhile, just as surprisingly Cornwall was close behind in second-place, while Oxfordshire was third.
BT’s west of England regional manager, Michael Dunn, said: "Who would have thought when ADSL broadband was introduced that relatively remote and rural areas such as Cornwall, Somerset and even the Isles of Scilly would have featured among the leaders?
"The success of broadband is a demonstration of the innovative nature of businesses and people in these areas, who are using technology to overcome the disadvantages posed by their distance from many major centres."
The survey also revealed that the national average for ADSL take-up in counties across England was 31 per cent.
