O2 broadband launch delayed

Telfonica, the Spanish based company which owns O2, has announced the launch of their broadband service for the UK and Germany is to be delayed again. The service was scheduled to be launch in spring 2007 but due to ‘teething problems’ has now been delayed to September this year.
Peter Erskine, the CEO of Telefonica O2 Europe’s mobile phone unit, commented on the delay for the launch saying “There is one thing that we will not do… (and that is) to launch stuff that isn’t ready on the customer”.
We could have rushed out a converged service in Germany,” Erskine said. “We chose to break it up into a simplified tariff and through the year will offer a broader range of services by launching DSL as well.”
Telefonica already has broadband service in the UK after they purchased Be for £50 million. Be provides ADSL2+ services which by September will cover half of the UK population, leaving O2 to negotiate a contract with BT wholesale for the remainder. If O2 choose not to go with BT wholesale then it is highly likely they will launch the service through it’s own direct channels.
