BT goes top and is stamping its authority

18th May 2007

As reported at Top 10 on Monday, BT have released their figures for the year so far, and again as predicted BT are now the largest broadband provider in the UK, surpassing Virgin Media.

BT added 440,000 broadband users for the first quarter, giving them just over 3.66 million customers. Usurping Virgin Media by almost 300,000 customers which is quite a substantial margin and gives BT a 26 per cent share of the overall broadband market (include cable, DSL and LLU)

Ian Livingston, CEO of BT Retail, welcomed the news: “I am delighted that we have regained the top slot as the nation’s favourite broadband retailer. Customers have shown what they clearly want: innovative products and services offering great value that are easy to use and deliver the exciting opportunities that broadband can provide.”

After this announcement BT also confirmed that they are going into a strategic partnership with the Post Office, which will see BT become the broadband provider for the Post Offices 400,000 HomePhone customers. The agreement, worth £750 million and lasting four years, is the largest single contract in BT Wholesales history. However, timing is not one of BT’s specialities, as it was announced on the same day that the Post Office were closing 2,500 branches.

Paul Reynolds, Chief Executive at BT Wholesale, said: “This is a landmark agreement between two of the UK’s leading and best established businesses. It will help to quickly establish the Post Office as a key player in an exciting, dynamic and ultra competitive market for broadband-based services. Today, people live their lives and run their businesses on broadband.”
