A team of Researchers led by the University of Tokyo have broken the internet speed record twice in two days. The revolutionary system imaginatively named Internet2 is capable of phenomenal speeds, and it was announced recently that on December 30th data was sent at 7.67 gigabits per second, using the standard communications protocols. The following day the team broke the record again, using modified protocols, the speed sent through the 20,000 mile path reached 9.08 Gb/s.
To put this speed into perspective, currently in the UK the highest speed theoretically possible is 24Mb/s, and a Gb (Gigabit) has 1,000 times more units of information than a Mb (Megabit), thus showing the mind-blowing new speeds capable by Internet2.
It is claimed too that with Internet2 you can download a high quality film such as ‘The Matrix’ in seconds rather than a couple of days as is common presently.
