It is now exactly one year on since Carphone Warehouse introduced its TalkTalk ‘free broadband’ offer. Despite major delivery issues the service was an unexpectedly huge success, and caused a massive price war within the industry. So one year later, how is free broadband doing?

A report from Uswitch has revealed how much things have changed in the broadband landscape over the past 12 months. The most notable difference relates to the reduction in price by other ISPs who now offer 6 times better value than before TalkTalks free broadband was launched. In that time Orange and Sky have brought out ‘free’ broadband packages also.

Attitudes have changed too, as 72% of people now see broadband as an essential service.

For the results on speed, Uswitch looked at the price per megabyte 12 months ago in comparison with today. The results showed a great change and how much competition has reduced prices. On average in April 2006 the cost per Mb/s was £12.80 compared to March 2007 where it cost £2.20 per Mb/s.

Another surprising statistic discovered by Uswitch was that 22% of people do not actually know how fast their broadband is.

It is incredible to see how much things have changed in 12 months, and now 50% of homes have broadband in the UK. With such major changes it is important to shop around too see if your original deal can now be bettered in terms of price and speed.
