Virgin have announced that in May this year (2007), they are expanding their XL package from 10Mb/s to 20Mb/s. Rumours had been circulating for quite a while, however it is now confirmed that this will happen in May. This is a drive to attract new customers, particularly after the ongoing fiasco between them and Sky. Although Virgin Media are trying hard to rectify the situation with customers, it is no surprise that many customers have gone to Sky in order to watch their favourite shows.

The new speed of 20Mb means it is now possible to download an MP3 track within 2 seconds, and will be very attractive to heavy downloader’s and online game players.

Although the maximum speed Virgin Media can deliver has doubled the price of the XL package will only increase by £2, from £35 per month to £37.

Sky has been quick to react to this stating that they already offer 16Mb broadband for £10 above the television cost, pointing out that at such high speeds the difference of 4Mb is minimal.

Virgin Media formally NTL:Telewest delivers broadband to customers using fibre-optic cables. This is theoretically faster and more reliable than conventional phone lines.

Also Virgin are currently researching 50Mb speeds, yet it is unknown when that will be available to customers.
