What is cable broadband?

Cable broadband is broadband transferred along fibre-optic cables under the ground. In the UK, these are specially laid cables only available in some areas.

Approximately 65% of UK homeowners have fibre optic cable access (January 2008) and this figure is expanding all the time. As well as for broadband, cable is also used for cable television and landline telephone calls.

The UK fibre optic cable infrastructure is currently owned and operated by Virgin Media who in 2006 bought the NTL and Telewest group who previously owned it.
